Luv Is Rage 2 Review, Lil Uzi Vert Delivers

“Luv Is Rage 2” by Lil Uzi Vert is finally here, also known as yeah, yeah, yeah: the album by anyone that presses play for this.

The Philadelphia rapper picked up steam leaving 2016 with a feature on “Bad and Boujee.” Then kept it going releasing one of the hottest songs 2017 with “XO Tour Life.”

Rage 2 lives up to what fans would expect from the catchy adlibs, anime references and a  braggadocios swagger on the tracks.

“The Way Life Goes” is an anthem for those going through rough times or experiencing loss. While boasting on parts, it’s clear that Uzi’s trying to convince himself that he’s better off than before.

This is apparent in the verse he says “If she ever call my phone you know I gotta dead her. But I like that girl too much, I wish I never met her.”

Uzi is creative when it comes to making tracks, there’s even a charm to the simplicity of the tunes. But, that’s also the downfall of a majority of tracks as they get too A-B-C elementary.

Pretty decent songs play most of the runtime, then “How to Talk” came on where Uzi literally rhymes with variations of yeah. I had to admire the stones it took to troll the people who dislike his adlib by doubling down.

Replace every period on this review with a “woah,” “huh” or “yeah” and you’ll have summed up the project as Lil Uzi Vert writes like a college student trying to meet word count.

Lines like “No I’m not a rat but I’m all about my cheddar,” would be cringe worthy coming from any other artist, but his delivery and flow make them work.

ouiiiii

“Unfazed” is example of when the repetition succeeds, this is a club song where nothing lyrically fancy is needed and is only saved thanks to The Weekend doing what he does best…singing about drugs and women.

Uzi raps here like someone is pointing a gun at him, threatening to shoot if he spits anything worth hearing. Well, he made it through the verse so take that as you will.

“Neon Guts” featuring Pharrell is also a standout as Skateboard P pulls a Casey Anthony as he murders the beat after creating it. Uzi and P make a great duo, as they’re both craftsman when it comes to making melodic jams.

The best song still remains “XO Tour Life” as the depressingly catchy anthem showcases what makes Uzi great.

“I’m committed, not addicted, but it keep control of me. All the pain, now I can’t feel it, I swear that it’s slowing me.”

Heartache has never been so compelling to sing as it is on the song. XO would make peppy Flo from Progressive commercials put on pounds of eyeliner, all black clothing and a choker.

While the project has a few gems and definitely grows on you with consecutive plays it is just held back in parts by repetition and uninspired songs.

While it’s not quite adlibs: the album, there’s enough quality content in between them to look forward to for what Uzi does next.

Worth an Add: XO Tour Life, Unfazed, The Way Life Goes, Neon Guts
Worth A Listen: 444+222, Sauce It Up

Made Music: Hudson Mohawke

The world can now exhale as a breath of fresh air has hit the music scene by the name of Hudson Mohawke. Crafting a record using a mix of electronic and rap, Mohawke makes an atmospheric song, with lyrics that will no doubt get stuck in someone’s head after the first listen.

“Very First Breath” is a single off oh his recently dropped “Latern” album, after years of producing for the biggest names in music today.

The video is full of vibrant visuals that only adds to the picture the track already paints in the mind. I still don’t fully understand what happens in the video, but I learned that you don’t mess with a tough chick and her squad, especially one that fears face paint.(edm events just became scarier)

Made Music: Le Perv

“Le Perv” might be the perfect name for this song as it touches everywhere in the listeners ear with heavy synths and straight electro goodness. It should be illegal to play this song without earphones or or some powerful speakers on deck

Made by Carpenter Brut, the song has gained exposure recently thanks to being on the Hotline Miami 2 Soundtrack. Playing this while driving down the street will instantly create a rave parade from your house to Chic-fil-A.

Made Music: Tyler The Creator

Continuing the fashion of rappers dropping albums out of nowhere, Tyler is back with this new banger from the “Cherry Bomb” album. 2015 is definitely prepping to be the year all rap fans will be eating.

“The Brown Stains of Darkeese Latifah Part 6-12 (Remix) ” is a bombastic, unapologetic song with Tyler on a unique production riffing on materialistic rap. This the type of track when he’s at his best, being Waka Flocka levels of ignorant, yet every line still having something deeper.

A surprise verse from Schoolboy Q is on the track, spitting lyrics with the same hunger he had on last year’s “Oxymoron”.

Made Music: Jeremih & J.Cole

This song is so smooth my underwear disappeared while playing it. Forget about my need to visit a clothing store for a second & end your day(or night) on a high note with “Planes” from Jeremih.

J.Cole drops a charming funny verse at the end with Jeremih continuing to show why he still has a place in music today throughout the song’s verses and hooks.

There is a more soulful live version featuring Chicago’s Chance The Rapper, which might be the better version of the two, featuring horns, faster tempo and maybe a fainted girl or two.

Which version is the best? Let it be known in the comments along with any others songs or artist that should be featured in the next Made Music. Like and subscribe to hear tracks that will make that playlist even more incredible.( Happy One Year Anniversary to the ianmadesomething channel)

Made Music: Top Albums of 2014

2014 was a year where the music industry had a free for all. Bigtime or small, every artist had their chance to make an impact. Here are the albums that were ahead of their competition, making albums that will act as a time capsule for what’s the best of 2014.

5)”2014 Forest Hills Drive” – J Cole
The whole internet spent December going crazy on how “fire” and “dope” this album is. After “Born Sinner”, I learned to close my ears as people will eat anything Cole says. He could be reading the audio version from “50 Shades of Grey” and they would set their stereos ablaze and claim “Cole did this”.

The praise is actually deserved this time in an album that perfect comes in a time where racial and social tensions are at an all-time high. Tackling a various subjects with a finesse that few other people in the “new school” class have of rap have.

It’s not perfect and is not trying to be, “2014 Forest Hills Drive” more than a photograph of time of where we as a society are and will progress.

Album Highpoints: “Intro”, “Apparently”, “No Role Modelz”, “G.O.M.D”, “Hello” .

4)”Oxymoron” – Schoolboy Q
When your project is going to be compared by everyone and their mom to your label mate (Kendrick Lamar), expectations will already set high. Q, unknown to the masses created an album full of bangers that took down hip hop heavyweight (no pun intended) Rick Ross.

In this age dominated by backpack rappers, this album is reminiscent of a simpler time when gangster rappers ruled the mainstream. It’s not trying to get anyone thinking about deep and philosophical, the tracks are hype, hard hitting and unapologetic.

Album Highpoints: “Hell of A Night”, “Studio”, “Man of The Year”, “Collard Greens”, “Break The Bank”.

3)”Everything Will Be Alright In The End” – Weezer
Weezer did what few bands who been around as long could, they recaptured the magic of their earlier projects. It’s one thing to imitate, but it’s another to create something newly original that still contains echoes of the past.

That rebellious garage band, adorably dorky sound is all here in a rock album where the momentum never stops. Giving this a listen will take someone back for an hour to better times and connect with a new generation like Weezer has done for years.

Album Highpoints: “I’ve Had It Up To Here”, “Da Vinci”, “Cleopatra”, “Go Away”, “The British Are Coming”.

2)”Talking Is Hard” – Walk The Moon
Their first self-titled album was full of catchy songs that didn’t stretch it’s arms too for anything past that. With their sophomore effort, they kept all the catchiness and added much more diversity to go from being a great band a favorite band.

Deep cutting guitar strings to synth covered records it’s all here blended up in a cohesive track list that all sound different, but are thematically consistent. Having seen them live, these types of songs are going to make for unforgettable performances to an already memorable album.

Album Highpoints: “Avalanche”, “Aquaman”, “Portugal”, “Shut Up And Dance”, “Up 2 U”.

1) “Worlds” – Porter Robinson
This one came as a big surprise as Robinson decided to bless the music world with more than just bass drops and fast tempos. He made a project that is sonically beautiful and will no doubt stand the test of time.

It’s experimental and succeeds in most areas where others have tried a failed. A testament on why people should turn their ears from the radio and to the internet, because this is where great projects like this can be showcased and found.

Album Highpoints: “Sad Machine”, “Fresh Static Snow”, “Hear The Bells”, “Lionhearted”,” Divinity”

Made Music: J.Cole & Wale

Either this is a dream or they did really just make fantastic songs. Never thought this day would come…but this week Made Music are J.Cole and Wale.

These artists were never bad and have made enjoyable songs in the past, but the albums could be described as “almost albums”. In terms of having projects that had some good songs and others that seemed promising but fell flat.

J.Cole must of found his inner music genie because it came out in his new project “2014 Forest Hills Drive” in the song “Intro”.

It’s short and simplistic track, yet gets deeper every time it’s played. Emotional doesn’t even touch the surface of what this song achieves in it’s short run time.

Wale has been king of DMV and doctors office background music since the dawn of time. A.K.A, music that’s just there playing in the background. Except, “Festivus” just dropped and featured many good tracks like “Friendship Heights

Chance The Rapper joins in to drop a great verse and the premise of the song is something guys/gals can relate to.

Made Music: Schoolboy Q & Porter Robinson

Two artists who came into their own in 2014 and caught the eyes & ears of everyone their music reached. Porter Robinson and Schoolboy Q are gonna have long careers if they keep out great tracks like the ones in today’s Made Music.

“Hell of A Night”, is no contest the best track off the “Oxymoron” album. The chilling harmony and trap beat makes this song a blast to listen with headphones or a speaker. This is something that should be on every DJ’s playlist

Q has guys out here wearing bucket hats looking like they’re about go fishing, yet still trendy as anything else out here.Somewhere in Smalltown U.S.A, Fisherman Jones is being called the “swaggiest” by the young people and he doesn’t know why.

I was never the biggest Porter fan, til this year when he aimed to change what defines an EDM artist and DJ. The “Worlds” album is full of creativity and high points, with “Easy” not being on the album, but a great example of the quality of his work.

See the album and concert review on the homepage if you want to know know more about Porter.

Made Music: Tink

2014 was the year this young artist finally got the spotlight on her, when she held her on the song “Moving Bass” with Jay-Z and Rick Ross. She went on to make a summer smash that many people didn’t hear, but now they will with today’s Made Music.

“Don’t Tell Nobody” is gonna be the anthem for every female in 2014. It flips the script near the end and makes the song even better with Jeremih doing what he does best.

She’s one of the few female rappers…scratch that just straight out rapper that will have you looking like you just ate a sour patch kid from her verses.

“Moving Bass” was released with lukewarm reception and it always felt like something was missing. Then, the original version got leaked with Tink, then it became clear what that special something was.

Made Music: La Roux

When a song has you wishing you were born in another era, it’s doing something right it. “Cruel Sexuality” is a love/hate anthem that everyone can relate to, but still feel very personal at the same time.

“I don’t even know myself, cause I’m becoming someone else.Where is rationality when I’m lost inside a dream.I say just use me”. Lyrics like these showcase La Roux’s great writing in an industry where it’s more about beats than lyrics these days.

La Roux looks and sounds like she just came straight 80’s with everything great musically about that era intact.

“Trouble In Paradise”, is an album full of great emotional tunes and “Paradise Is You” is the strongest track off of it. This is that song your gonna sing loudly in the car like no one else is around at the intersection.
