Made Movies: Tomorrowland Review

The fantastical world of “Tomorrowland” has arrived and it evokes the ideas of yesteryear to make an enjoyable ride from start to finish.

The film centers on a bright young girl named Casey Newton (Britt Robertson), who receives a pin that shows her glimpses into another world that leads her to Frank Walker (George Clooney), an aged former boy-genius inventor and they embark on a journey to the long hidden world of “Tomorrowland”.

Director Brad Bird made a cautionary science fiction tale with a lengthy runtime that flies by. It’s near impossible for audience not to be amazed by the sights and sounds as creativity comes to life on the big screen, forgetting that another hour just passed by.

The highlight of the film is any scene with Raffey Cassidy, who plays Athena and is acting circles around her fellow co-stars. This 12 year old is holding her own in scenes with a veteran actor like Clooney, while bring charm and heart to the experience.

The first quarter of “Tomorrowland” is a mixed bag until the whole crew unites for the adventure, then it picks up and never stops. Jokes for example are rarely something that everyone ever laughed at, it’s either one person or the other chuckling, furthering the notion that some parts are disjointed by a split audience.

The film is a bit all over the place in terms of coherence, with a few points feeling likes it’s geared towards children, while most of it feeling like it’s a sci-fi action film aimed for teens and adults, supported by the ending that will undoubtedly go over the heads of young viewers.

The lowest point of the film is after the opening sequence when it’s focusing on Casey, she just doesn’t have that much going on with her. Casey was just not as interesting as other characters, such as Frank and Athena, who had a way more compelling backstory and dialogue.

The music was a little grating at certain points, in case some forgot they were watching a Disney movie, the horns would come blaring in to remind them. These are few and far between and by the end, you either accept the campiness or don’t.

The “dead mom” cliché is also reminds that it’s a Disney movie. There must have been a law made years ago making it illegal to have a mother figure in these stories, as Casey’s mom leaves the film as if to say to viewers ”you know how this goes”.

The world they build was so fascinating and it’s a shame they didn’t explore it more. Athena alludes to other people that also received the pin, basically teasing other stories taking place before/during the movie’s start. There was more lore than there was actual story, which is still a good thing.

“Tomorrowland” is filled with many great fight scenes that feature a lot of creative weapons and gadgets. The best uses of these gadgets are shown when Frank’s house was under attack, making for a thrilling scene as he and Casey try to escape.

Inspired by a time when imagination was at the forefront, Frank tells Casey and basically audience members that want to nitpick into the science something to the effect of “can’t you just be amazed and move on?”

The set and costume design is excellent, really nailing the futuristic 50’s look and a city that looks like it was designed by a bunch of dreamers.

An aspect of where everything doesn’t stand as tall is the special effects. At times they look exceptional when used in smaller instances, while in other moments they look like something off of Youtube in 2008.

Hugh Laurie’s Nix character is the antagonist of the film and really embodies that word, because he’s not really a villain, but rather somebody in the way of the trio completing the journey. His reasoning for wanting to stop them is so reasonable, I found myself kind of rooting for him to win.

“Tomorrowland” is a great complex concept, that’s acceptable when it drops the ball at points only because of how good it is when it does deliver. It features everything, a British “villain”, compelling twists and the brilliant Raffey Cassidy; I just had to give her another shout out and find a way to end this review abru-

First Offical Image of Jared Leto’s Joker

This isnt your mom & dads Joker, or older brother’s or… wait, what exactly are we looking at here?

Giving hints throughout the weeks that this Joker would be influenced by Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns.”Suicide Squad” director, David Ayer has tweeted out the first image of Leto in full Joker form after months of teasing.

For those who don’t know, the film is based on the comic series of the same name about a group of villains who are forced to go on the most dangerous missions from the government in exchange for pardons.

Leto’s Joker looks to be completely different from any other incarnation on the big screen. Twisted, tatted up and the kind of look that would make someone cross to the other side walk.

Can’t wait for all the cosplay that’s going to give kids nightmares or the inevitable”Ledger was better” battles in the comments.

Set to be released next year after Batman V Superman, “Suicide Squad” is first of many DC movies to come after the clash of the two comic titans.

Furious 7 Review

Physics and logic are about to take a rough beating from “Furious 7” crew, as they toss both of them out the window early in the movie. It’s been almost 15 years since this franchise began, now the 7th installment aims high, literally with flying cars & more.

The plot involves Dom & company are being hunted by the brother of the previous movie’s villain, Deckard Shaw(Jason Statham) in revenge for killing him. They are being picked off one by one till they decide to go on the offensive in a battle that spans multiple countries.

Possibly the most use of the fast cars in the series in a while, the film comes up with creative & outlandish ways to use the vehicles as weapons. Director James Wan combines a mix between disaster, spy and superhero flicks into one film. Ludacris, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyreese Gibson all have their moment to shine as Tej, Letty and Roman respectively.

As with previous entries, the chemistry between the characters is the heart of this adventure. Audiences have had seven movies of watching these characters grow, and watching them banter is possibly more entertaining than any of the insane stunts.

The stunts are impressive using mostly practical effects whenever possible and CGI to make the impossible a reality. The choreography deserves a mention as the fight scenes like the one between Michelle Rodriguez and Ronda Rousey are a brutal dance of fists, kicks and grapple takedowns.

The film started with a premise of avenging a Han’s death, and then it turned into a globe-trotting trip and with each new location a viewer can’t help but ask “wait, what we are doing here again?” Even though the plot veered way off, the action set pieces more than make up for the lack of focus.

A problem that arises throughout this film is when characters are shown to be near indestructible and the audience is expected to believe that anything less than a nuke could kill them. A character walked off getting shot in the head before winking at the camera, reminding everyone what movie they’re watching.

The movie’s runtime is a little long and while a fun adventure, it felt like it was going nowhere at times. Rarely, is there ever a minute of downtime, which can hurt the big action moments because everything is always going 100 mph.

Dom ends almost every sentence with word “family”, if this whole street racer secret agent thing doesn’t work out, he can definitely become a guidance counselor or become Groot’s long lost cousin in the Guardian films

Shaw is portrayed as a very real threat throughout the movie and his persistence to kill Dom’s crew is almost like a Terminator. My only gripe with him is they show he’s a very capable threat till the final battle, where it seems he went from Terminator to Random Thug #2.

It’s well known that since Paul Walker died in 2013, his brothers & CGI were used complete the rest of his scenes. I was watching like a hawk to see where the CGI-Walker, but that moment never really came and everything felt as if he never even left.

If your one of those people that gets hung up on the fact there’s a talking snowman in “Frozen”, then number one this may not be for you and number two you need way less free time. All of these are just minor annoyances that can turn into a big one for those who can’t suspend their disbelief.

The Rock doesn’t appear in many scenes, but when he does it’s very special and will be the big talk in the parking lot afterwards. Between Vin Diesel deadlifting a car or The Rock flexing his way out a cast, ”Furious 7” doesn’t want anyone to question where it’s going but rather just enjoy the ride.

Signaling the start of summer blockbusters with an exclamation point, this film brings humor, explosions and heart all in one package. Now get in that beast of a ’97 Camry and drive fa-, I mean moderately safe to the nearest theater to see this flick.

Power Rangers Gets Darker In’s Short Film

The 90’s were defined by three things with “Pokemon”, dial up internet and “Power Rangers”. Recently, this week the world got was suprised with a violent, futuristic take on the world saving heroes.

The new short film titled ”POWER/RANGER”, featuring a different and darker version on the original Rangers.
James Van Der Beek plays Rocky, an ex-Ranger who interrogates his former teammate Kimberly(Katee Sackhoff) as they go over the events of their fallen teammates.

In 12 minutes, director Joseph Kahn, made something that could very well double as a campaign on why the franchise would see new heights in his hands. The acting in the interrogation scenes were quality as well as the action moments.

This is 2015 and why would Power Rangers have a place in today’s pop culture? After watching this video, the giant mech fighting teens may be ready to take over the world again.

There’s a legal battle with the company who owns the rights trying to take this off the internet, so watch them why you can. Poor grumpy old men in suits who don’t know rule number one of the internet, once it’s on, it can never be gone.

Made Movies: Ride Along Review

Kevin Hart and Ice Cube together on screen for the first time ever in Ride Along.Too bad this ride has barely any gas in it.

The story centers on Ben Barber (Hart) a small time security guard, who joins police officer James Payton (Cube), on a patrol of Atlanta to show he is worthy of marrying his sister. They should have replaced the ”ride“ with ”drag” in the title.

The first half of the movie has Hart throwing line after line of jokes; that often miss their mark. Truthfully, it is just a platform for Kevin Hart…to play Kevin Hart.

Luckily, other stars make an appearance in the supporting cast such as comedians Gary Owens, Jay Pharoah and rapper David Banner. They provide some memorable highlights, like a naked man covered in honey wrestling in a supermarket. Enough said.

Ice Cube does not do much besides stand there, and scowl at Kevin Hart’s antics. There is a cringe worthy moment in the movie where Cube says, “Today was a good day”, a reference to his hit 90’s song. It would have been no surprise if Ice Cube took a mic out, then just rapped the rest of his record afterward .

There is an interesting subplot involving James looking to takedown a crime kingpin called Omar. The story picks up halfway with a hilarious scene involving Kevin Hart and a shotgun. The chuckles turn into laughs as Hart slips in his comfort zone with psychical comedy.

Cube plays the straight man throughout the film to Hart’s over-the-top performance, but their chemistry falls flat. Both actors felt as if they were in different movies or even reading different scripts. Chemistry is what carries these buddy cop films like Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys.

Laurence Fishburn pokes his head in to play the villainous Omar, giving a sense of danger for the two heroes throughout the film. There is a chilling aura as Fishburn commands the screen with the little time he has on it. Expect anyone named thug one and two not make it to the end of the story.

Ride Along does overstay its welcome, like a buddy’s stay on your couch for the night turning into months. Clocking in at 100 minutes, the film moves at a fast pace, yet feels like it is going nowhere even quicker.

A saving grace is that Hart’s improv skills are the real star, especially since his costars look like they are about to break character by laughing along with the viewers.

Ride Along is an entertaining movie for the most part, filled with bad sections that drag along at times. All of the films funniest scenes are in the trailer, which is disappointing considering it had so much promise. (Some of you) might want to miss this ride and wait until it comes to Netflix or television.

Made Movies: The Lego Movie

I think I need a doctor, because I haven’t stopped smiling since leaving the theatre. For days I’ve been laughing uncontrollably down city streets, looking like a super villain from The Lego Movie.

This film centers on Emmet an ordinary construction worker, who overnight turns from a nobody to the most important person with the world’s fate in his hands.

From the minds behind 21 Jump Street and Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, Christopher Miller and Phill Lord bring a style distinct from the others. They take ideas for films that no one would bat an eyelash and turn them into something brilliant.

Each scene feels animated and alive with every moment, even in the background there’s always something to laugh at.

Visually, it has a unique look with the use of traditional of computer animation to create a look of stop motion. When there’s an explosion with fire and smoke, they have an unnatural yet beautiful flow at the same time.

The film is creative to the point where screams of amazement to what was happening on screen became a normal thing. Whether it’s a monkey on a mini horse riding a horse or the heroes driving up a rainbow on the Bat Mobile, someone would be hard-pressed to not be charmed these sights and sounds.

The movie feels like if someone from the Adventure Time cartoon was let loose and given a pile of money then told” here go do whatever you want with these Legos, camera and film crew.” For example, after horrible speech from Emmet, Abraham Lincoln flies off on his rocket powered chair into the sky.

Emmet most notable teammate includes Batman, played by Will Arnett. Batman steals the show as he is such a self-centered jerk, obsessed with darkness and the sound of his own voice. There is a hilarious scene of a death metal song written, produced and sang by Batman about how great he is.

Speaking of music, the movie sounds are like something a younger version of myself would make while playing with Lego’s. The films catchy theme song” Everything Is Awesome”, has been stuck in my head for days and refuses to leave.

Will Ferrell voices Lord Business, who is so over the top as the baddie with evil schemes and dialogue, it’s impossible not to love the character.

Good Cop/Bad Cop is an ingenious character played by Liam Neeson, who makes interrogations a confusing living nightmare for anyone in the room.

For anyone who grew up on cartoons, there are still plenty of jokes like the “space cake “comment that the new generation kids won’t fully get either for a few years. Moments like these are worth it as a viewer watches the kids in theatre ask uncomfortable questions to the adults.

There is an emotionally deep side to the story, which brings up some existential questions to the audience. Considering it’s coming from The Lego Movie is another pleasant surprise to an already well rounded experience.

When leaving, a reminder of what kind of bullet I dodged appeared as the legion of children asking their parents for a trip to the toy store. Those wallets never stood a chance like my mind when it exploded from the experience afterwards.

Old or young, The Lego Movie is a rare film that captures that happy place in everyone and never let goes

Deadpool Movie Gets A Release Date

He looks so innocent before all the slicing

He looks so innocent before all the slicing

That’s right, The Merc With The Mouth finally has the green light for his solo feature film debut. Valentine’s week just got a lot more red and little messier, with Deadpool scheduled to be released February,12th, 2016.

Deadpool has a very dedicated and vocal(to put it nicely) fan base and ever since his appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, fans have been waiting to hear this news for almost five years now.

20th Century Fox releasing the film with Tim Miller set to direct and the movie is being penned by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Superhero movies have become the big trend in Hollywood and now that unknown properties such as Guardians of The Galaxy are making a lot of money, other studios are seeking a piece of the pie now.

Deadpool is a wise cracking mercenary who often crosses paths with Marvel’s most famous superheros such as Spider-Man,Wolverine,etc. He often breaks the 4th wall and talks directly to the readers, knowing he is in a comic book.

In the last decade or so, he has gained traction with a ever growing fan base and become one of Marvel’s top heroes(or anti-heroes).

The question most fans have are their mind is if Deadpool is going be Rated-R or PG-13, this will be a factor in if it will stay true to it’s comic counterpart. The filmmakers are pushing for an R, although it is unknown if the studio will allow it as Rated-R movies are “riskier” financially.

If the film does go with an R rating, this might be smarter in terms of theirs not much competition of the superhero genre for R films. It will standout and let the character show why so many want a movie centered around him.

Ryan Rynolds has been leading the charge on getting this movie made for years now and seems to be the one also in lead role after some leaked test footage.

Deapool’s not completely a good or bad person, depending on who is writing him. One thing for sure is this movie will definitely be on the must watch list for 2016.

Why We Love

scott pilgrim couple

Contrary to what the romantic movies say, most guys don’t run to train station at the last minute to shout how they‘re in love with the girl. In reality, the guy is sitting in a chair, sulking and trying to convince himself that its better he let her go.

How are we supposed to know what’s meant to be and what’s not? We don’t, but if one thing is true is that most the time people regret what they could have done.

Whether it be telling that special guy or gal those magic words you never said to hear or embracing them in the moment they needed it the most.

Love is tangled mess of emotions, one minute it can make for the happiest moment in someone’s life, the next it can be the most rage filled scream fest with no end in sight.

There are many types of girls out there. The ones who seem to need a man to validate themselves, the ones who say they don’t need anybody and the ones who are closed off.

Guys come in many different forms too. The players who will use and move on to the next girl, the needy guys who tries too hard to satisfy their woman’s every want and the bad boy who’s appeal to a female is that they can change them.

Relationships can be scary and some might say overwhelming, but the beauty of the whole thing is the harder you have fight for one, the more you know that person is worth it.

It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve been hurt or how many people you’ve been with. All that matters is the here and now and how you both feel about each other.

Don’t be scared to give a relationship a chance, even if it worries you about how it’ll affect everything if it doesn’t work out. This road of self-doubt will lead to living in a house with huge number of cats no one should have.

The most important thing is not to stress out over men or women, but to enjoy life and the friends you have in it. Don’t sit in the dark listening to some emo band, your life isn’t that bad. Save the brooding for Batman and go have fun.

Movies like to put this idea of love in our head, the truth is we make our own definition of it; following your heart is the best thing anyone could do, whether it be good or bad.
